Adulthood (Drama)

The opening of adulthood up to 3:30
Adulthood is the first film I am analysing. This film opening is only appropriate for people that are at least 16+; this is because the film includes scenes of sex, bad language and violence. This film is a sequel of kidulthood, it is about a group of people that want to get revenge on someone that has just recently come out of prison for killing their best friend. The film is meant to show everything that happens in one day (the day Sam gets let out of prison) it is also meant to show what can happen in the rougher parts of the country, although it is exaggerated, they are along the right lines, this also helps to put their point across to the viewers to make them realise how hard life can be in the rougher parts of England. Before starting this film they show the highlights and important parts of the last film, kidulthood, this is too remind the viewers what happened so it is easier to follow. It is also to show the rest of the viewers that haven’t seen prequel, Kidulthood briefly what happened, and to give them a short overview.

In the opening scene of Adulthood, after the reminder of the prequel, 'six years later' shows on a blurry background, this is to focus the audience’s attention so they can follow the rest of the film. The writing then fades away and the background of a main road with car lights running across the screen comes into focus. There is then an aerial view of a rave, showing a big group of people dancing, there is also loud music playing throughout the whole opening scene, This aerial view is also mise en scene as it shows everything that is happening in this scene. There are then a lot of close ups of people dancing as well as split-screens of different groups dancing at the same time. This is to show their facial expressions and to show that they are all having a good time. It shows these split-screens at a fast tempo to create a fast atmosphere at the rave. The camera then focuses on one person, a girl, after a change of speed into slow motion then a quick burst of speed it shows someone following her, a mid shot is used to show both characters. She then walks over to a group of boys, the speech starts with an over the shoulder shot from the person that was following the girl, they talk amongst each other and the follower walks away. A match on action shot is used to show a car arriving on the other side of the road, cross cutting is then used to show the expression on the drivers face then to see the group’s reaction. The nature of the group is shown by how they stand and talk as it is very street like and they understand each other when we sometimes can't. You can tell easily that it is a rave by what everyone is wearing, they are all wearing casual clothes such as jeans, joggers, sports jackets etc, a long shot is used so when the two boys start walking over to the car, it then cross cuts back to the person in the car, who is looking through his wing mirror watching the boys walk over. The boys then jump in the car and attack the man sitting in it. We then see a gun and a shot is fired. The scene ends with the two boys running away then cross cutting back to the man in the car screaming in pain, the title of the film is then shown ('ADULTHOOD').

Examples of a Drama

Examples of this type of Drama are Adulthood and SHANK, pictures shown above the text, but many more exist. They both involve sex, drugs and violence and this is seen as an exciting and good movies because of the happenings in the programmes. Most of the audience, know that this is not a typical place in society but it is like this is some places, these movies show how it occurs and what happens in some areas of the country. These movies are rated at least a 16+, this is because at this age you are more aware of what is going on in society and with this aged rating it eliminates any potential young audience to be disturbed or scared by what they are watching.

Details on Media Task

The group in which I will be working in consists of myself (Nicholas Pitcher), Daniel Berridge, Duncan Anderson and Jamie Cole. We Chose this group as we feel that we have a good relationship and believe we can all contribute a certain skill into the task, making the final outcome effective. It will also be easy for our group to meet up and work on the task out of school. We have chosen the genre of Drama, this is because Drama is becoming a more popular and upcoming type of genre now a days. Meaning there is more films that we have recently become more familiar with. This gives us more ideas for our task as we are familiar with Drama and this allow us to produce the right kind of end product.

A Drama consists of
  • Simple good and bad characters
  • All tell a story
  • If sequels happen, the ending is normally left on a cliffhanger to encourage viewers to watch next time the programmes on.
  • Certain shot and shot sequence types are used
  • Music is used to create the scene, action and create effects
  • Dialogues and occasionally monologues are used to tell parts of the story (usually the start or ending)
