The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 (Horror)

This is the fourth comparison of a film I am using, the film is a horror and the rating of it is a 18 due to bad language, sexual contents and gory features, which a younger audience may be seen unable to cope with. Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to produce the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre.

The film Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an American remake of the 1974 horror Movie. This 2003 version of the film is also produced by the co producers of the 1974 released Movie. The Film is were a group of 5 friends that pass through an area and are then stalked and hunted down by a deformed killer who carries a chainsaw, he does this in order to sustain his poor family who can only afford to eat what they can kill.

The next bit of the extract chosen, shows a close up of a police line saying 'do not cross' as this is shown in the background there is a car in a field area, a noise then sounds as if a camera picture capture has just take place and the police line crosses to a new scenery of a river, with the line across it again. The police line then goes to another scenery to show that many crimes have occurred, that are being investigated and are related. A close up is then captured of evidence such as clothing and body remains.
The film then moves into more presence times, and the voice in the background explains this is 30 years after the incidents took place. There is a close up on a person searching through police confidential files, close ups of some evidence files and items which were kept are shown, the man explains thirteen hundred pieces of evidence was found. Different evidence from clothing, to fishing lures to weapons are shown using a close up. a close up is used on the shoes then the camera shot is then used to perform an extreme close up, allowing the audience to go into more detail on the shoe and the evidence. Attached to all these pieces of things is a not named 'evidence' this shows that the crime is still on going and gives the audience the idea that this is going to relate to the film. there is then a close up and the camera scrolls to the right over a newspaper reading title from the title this tells us that the film is going to be a horror. There is then a close up of collected film evidence, this then relates to the next scene which is from the collected film evidence.
The Clip of this Part of the film, I will be talking about is from the Start 0:00 to 2:40. The extract and opening of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' starts with advertising credits showing who is a sponsor or helped create the film. As the credits appear, a backing music starts up, which is mysterious and cautious, this then creates a atmosphere for the whole film as we no this is going to be a horror film, just from the opening music. After the advertising credits, the film starts in black and white with the continuous mysterious backing music. The first scene shows a police ambulance van and two people stretchering a dead body into the back of it, this is done using a wide shot, showing the object and its surroundings. As this shot is captured a man begins to talk in the background describing and detailing what is happening.

The next scene is in black and white and a police man is walking through the horror house and pointing out different things which look out of the ordinary. The recording is done with another person, likely another police person. We think this as the recording of the police man isn’t the greatest and is a bit shaky. The camera man follows the police man who is speaking showing and filming different things. The man in the background who was talking originally is now talking again explaining that a terrible day took place before there and the happenings are known as the 'Texas chainsaw massacre' then the title appears in a police file like presentation with the title in black blue and white, posted on a chalkboard like background. With the date of the police file underneath the title. As the Title appears on screen and the background man stops talking a screech and scream fill out, telling the audience this story is not going to be a pleasant one, the title then disappears.

ZombieLand-Beginning Credits Part 1 (Comedy)

Zombieland Part 1

The third Film and Genre we are looking at is Zombieland and is a comedy. The rating of this film is a 15 due to scenes of violence, bad language and gory footage. It was produced in 2009 meaning it is a fairly recent and modern film, meaning that no prequels or sequels have been made yet. Zombieland was produced to entertain the audiences with comedy and a good storyline. This has been successful due to most nowadays most zombie films are very serious, but this one is a comedy and brings a sense of humour and a jokingly atmosphere to the film.

This first part of the video only has part of the opening scene, the rest of the opening scene is shown is 'part 2'. Part 1 includes credits. Through out the whole of part 1 credits there are lots of slow motion clips. This is to introduce the happenings of what the film will be based on, so the audience is aware of what they are about to watch. The slow motion is used to create an atmosphere and express the happenings more. The credits themselves are in the same style and format as the movie title itself, this indicates that the people who produced the film are proud and see their selves as important as the film itself. Also at the start and all the way through this short clip a rock type of music is playing to create a high tempo atmosphere and to show that this film is going to be very active and not a relaxed, chilled film. Also the music flows with the action all the way through the credits as the motion is slow and is perfectly matched with the music in the back round.

The Actors are clearly zombies due to the having thick blood around their mouths and on their clothes, also the way they are actions for example running differently and acting in a strange manor. Were as the actors who play the survivors have a clear presentation of normal person personality with relevant, tidy clothes. Also the zombies are acting in a disturbed angry manor, but non-zombiefied people are acting normal and in a sociolble manor.

Through out the clip provided, there are many different screen shots, which occur. First of all when the man is shown jumping off the stairs away from the zombie, this is a long shot being shot. There is a close up of the zombie which allows the audience to see the detail and emphasise that he is a zombie and looks evil and out of control, there is also a highway in the back round showing that while everything goes on people are unaware there is a terrifying zombie on the loose in the city. Next the women is running away from the zombie and spills her drink, this is a mid shot being captured. Three zombies being helpless, as a couple run away in the back round then attack a homeless man with a sign. The next scene shown is at a wedding when the bride jumps at and attacks the groom. Next is a chase with the zombie behind the man as she breaks and smashes the glass in front of him to try and get away, this is a mid shot. As the glass smashes so does the title of the film 'zombieland' this then splits into half to. There is then a long shot of a man running away from the zombies as suitcase of money gets thrown and flies up into the air, this shows the desperation to get away, that even money doesn’t matter any more. There is then a close up on the police who are trying to keep control on the zombie by using riot shields. This shows that the zombies are very powerful. Then there is a shot showing men running away from a strip club with a stripper following chasing the men. After that there is a mid shot of a mechanic being attacked by a zombie while he is trying to work. Next is a shot of a dad and son running away from other dads and sons who have just been in a three-legged race, this is a long shot being used and a running track is being showed in the back round. There is then a mid shot of a man running away from a zombie looking terrified. A long shot is then shown of two firemen, one running away and a person (could be the zombie) running away who is set on fire but not concerned or in pain. Next there is a mid shot of a smartly dressed man in a suit shooting and defending himself unaware that a zombie is running at him in the back round. Lastly the credits finish with a man falling and diving through glass, with blood splattering and splashing over the view. Through out all of the credits every credit shown is moved either being smashed, flipped, twisted or broke into pieces to show and inflict that the credits are inside the scene and involved in the shots used.

ZombieLand Rules Part 2 (Comedy)

Zombieland Part 2

This is the Second part of the opening to Zombieland. This part is past the credits and starts by including and telling the audience some key points on how to avoid being eaten and turned into a zombie. Through out sections of the opening 1:55 big bold colourful writing appears which are the points on how to survive, this addresses the audiences. Also the audience is addressed through the way the man in the film is explaining and talking over the footage on what he means by the rules on how to survive and speaks as if there is a guide and order on what to do, to achieve this. With in the opening of the film after every rule that pops up on the screen, an example of what could happen if you don't b n follow that rule is shown and each consequence shown leads on to the next rule in the guide.

This clip starts with the background person explaining that he is now going to tell the audience the 'rules'. The first scene has a lot of effects in it; first of all as he announces the first rule and it appears on the screen saying 'cardio' this then starts beating on the screen as if it is a heart, adding effect. Next there is a wide shot of the man, the zombie and part of the sports pitch, this shows the man running away and tells the audience what location they are at. The man carries on being chased by the zombie and this then becomes slow motion to express the man's facial expressions and to show that he is terrified. After this there is a long shot camera shot, this is used to show the scenery and that no one is around so the place is a ghost town, it also shows that the zombies can attack at any time. The next shot is a close up on the zombies face as he tears into the mans face, this shows a lot of detail on the zombies face and lets the audience know that the zombie is out of control.

The next scenery is in the streets as two cars crash a birds eye view shot is produced to show the havoc of the crash and what the zombies have done to the street. After this a zombie is then hit by a car in slow motion relating to the havoc, which has been encountered, and to show that people are doing anything to escape from them. The man then introduces the next point by carrying on talking to the audience, which is 'double tap'. As he introduces the rule the title 'double tap' appears on the screen and as he saying the phrase, gun bullets are shot at a zombie which is running next to the on-screen phrase and the bullets go into the title as if it has been shot as well as the zombie. The camera then goes onto a still motion of a zombie, which is believed to be dead, but then jumps back up and goes back into a moving motion.

The opening then goes into the scene of a toilet block, through out most of this scene there is a mysterious and horror like sound to build up tension. The first shot used is a bird’s eye view shot, which shows the man on the toilet minding his own business and reading a book. The next shot is a mid close up which shows the mans face as he see's the zombie and the man becomes shocked and looks very anxious the shot also shows some of the toilet background. After this the zombie is shown using a close up shot to show the audience his face in details, showing the blood streaming from his mouth. The next rule then pops up on the screen.

The first shot of the next scene is a close up focusing on to a women’s hand trying to get the keys into the ignition to start the car up and get away from the zombies, the camera shows her shaking this tells the audience she is frightened and the zombies are terrifying. The next shot used is a wide shot when the car drives of and girls follow and chase the vehicle from behind, this shows us what’s going on and the scenery around the on going event. After this a close up is used again focusing on one specific little car toy, the shot shows it shaking, which builds up tension making the audience know something is about to happen. The scene then goes into slow motion as a car crashes into a lorry, a women then fly’s out of the windscreen and this is also slow motion as she 'fly’s' through the air, the speed then picks up as she hits the floor and slides across the road causing the women to die due to being edgy and determined to get away from the zombies, speeding and not wearing a seat belt. As she slides along the road a bird’s eye view shot is used, this also enables the next rule to come up on the screen, which is 'seatbelts'. The clip ends with a still motion of the women dead on the floor due to not wearing a seat belt and the lorry behind, showing what caused this.

Shank (2010) (Drama)

Opening of Shank

The opening of SHANK from 38 seconds in to 3:55 minutes through

This is the second film from our specific genre that I am analysing. This one is also meant to be for people that are at least 16+ as it contains sex, violence and bad language. This has no sequels or prequels at present, however there could be sequels to come in the future. SHANK was made for many reasons but not just to only entertain, but as well as adulthood, it was made to show the viewers how bad and how serious life can be in these areas of Britain, again, like adulthood, it is slightly exaggerated as this is not everyday life, however these things can sometimes happen.

At 38 Seconds in to the film i am writing about, It starts with a news report running in the background while riot scenes are playing, this is to give us an example of what sort of thing the film will be about, the TV then goes fuzzy and the credits start with a mysterious music track with a fairly slow beat playing. The credits are of big, bold, bolk writing on a fairly plain but specialised, white and patches of white background so that they stand out for the audience. The characters actor’s names then come up with a picture of them next to the name, the last few credits end up fading in to what looks like an estate due to the stairs and buildings shown. And the last bits of the credit gives the audience the feeling that the place, where this is set is a run down, crime life and not a busy setting. This is because of the destroyed car, barbed wire and the security cameras shown.

The scene then starts with someone’s legs running down the middle of a road, the camera angle then changes so we see the boy from behind. The camera shows a motor bike chasing close behind. Crosscutting is then used to show the expression on the boys face and to show his emotion, then to the motor bike wheels, then back to the boy’s feet to show him running again. There is a lot of crosscutting in the opening scene of this film; this is to create a fast atmosphere and pace. The boy then runs down an alley, the bike then screeches as it brakes to turn the corner, this is known as diagetic sound. When they are running down the alley, there are washing lines and other things surrounding, this sets the scene and helps the audience to see how different London is in 2015 compared to now. Slow motion is then used for when the motor bike jumps out of the alley and back onto the road; this is used to make the scene as dramatic as possible. The camera then follows both the biker and the boy chasing through he streets past some garages, the picture then freezes and 'LONDON 2015' in block capitals is shown, this is so the viewers know when the film is set and so it is easier to understand and in some ways not be offensive to London as this is showing the film is made up.
It then shows the bike riding through some of the scenery (e.g. the market); this gives the audience more of an idea of what London is like. There is then a flash-through of pictures; again this is to show how fast the chase is and to get us more involved. A quick long shot is then used to show the boy jumping in slow motion over a rail, with the bike following close behind skidding round a corner. Another slow motion is used to show him climbing over a gate, this is to show us hoe close he is to getting caught. The boy runs out in the middle of the road to see a car coming the other way, there is a short pause to determine how the boy reacts as in real life you need a second or two to react too. The boy then jumps over the car and continues to run, the camera shakes as he is running to create a good atmosphere, and he runs to a bridge to find himself cornered as there is another person coming the other way. There is a lot of crosscutting with the 3 people to show their faces and to emphasise the situation he is in. the last part is him jumping in slow motion of a high bridge landing safely and looking back up towards the two people. More cross cutting is then used to show the person on the bike taking off his helmet and giving an angry look at him then back to the boy walking off. The end of this scene shows how serious and frightening this film is, as the boy running away was prepared to put his own life at risk to get away from the chasers.
